Courses taken within D2L have access to an internal messaging system that is only available within the online course or the D2L Pulse App. This internal messaging system is different from the student email address that’s assigned to each student upon registration. Check with your instructor to see what their communication preferences are and if the Internal Messaging system will be used in a course.

Internal Messages cannot be responded to outside of D2L and are unable to communicate with external email addresses such as @student.cccs.edu or @arapahoe.edu accounts. Please note that Internal Messages can be forwarded to these accounts, but you must always go back into D2L to respond to emails from instructors or other students.

When you have a waiting internal message, an orange dot will appear on the envelope icon above the Navbar. Select the icon and select Internal Messaging to view your internal messages.

Sending Internal Messages

To send an internal message to a fellow student or instructor from one of your courses, select Classlist.

Select the person or persons you would like to internal message and select Internal messaging.

The subject field automatically populates with the course name, which you can add or change. Under the body section, you can change your text's bold, italic, or underlining. You can also adjust the alignment, add lists, or add videos, links, images, mathematical equations, and more.

Once you are ready to send your internal message, select Send, you may also Save as Draft or select Cancel.

Note: email addresses do not populate in the To field but rather in the BCC field.

To add attachments to your internal message, drag and drop or upload files in the Attachments box. You can also record video or audio using the Record dropdown.

Forward Internal Messages and Create Signatures

Modify your internal messaging settings and create a signature by selecting the Settings gear within the Internal Messaging system.

Settings can also be accessed by selecting your name at the upper-right corner of the D2L screen. On the drop-down menu select Account Settings.

On the Account Settings screen, select the Internal Messaging tab. This opens a variety of settings as well as an area to set up a signature. Configure these settings with your preferences.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to the Forwarding Options. This section enables you to forward D2L Internal Messages to external email accounts.

Select Save and Close when your settings are completed.

Note: You can set up email forwarding to your school email. However, you cannot reply to internal messages from an external email address.
